Smith is a member of Landrum Masonic Lodge, AFM, and the Spartanburg Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection. Smith has served in various areas of masonry since 1979. He was Coronated Inspector General Honorary in 1999. A 1981 graduate of the University of South Carolina Spartanburg where he received a degree in Biology, Smith has established a splendid record of public service. He serves on the board of trustees of Spartanburg County School District 1 and chairs the bond referendum committee. Active in the USCS Alumni Association, Smith served on the alumni board. Always supportive of his communities' youth, Smith has served on the board of directors of the Inman Youth Association, Chapman High School Athletic Booster Club, the band booster club and other community organizations dedicated to serving the young people of his community. Smith and his wife Lynn are members of the Inman First Baptist Church where he has served on the Church Finance Committee. They have two children. Smith's appointment represents the Supreme Commander's pledge to reach out to young people reconnecting America's future with it's Masonic past. Also, observers believe that the selection of an outstanding young man, such as Mike Smith, who was reared and educated in a small South Carolina town, will assist the fraternity to appeal to leaders in similar communities across the state. In 2003 Illustrious Michael D. Smith was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees to raise $10 Million Dollars in 5 years for the Scottish Rite Foundation of South Carolina, Inc. to establish and operate numerous Rite Care Clinics in South Carolina. The appointment was made by Sovereign Grand Commander C. Fred Kleinknect Supreme Commander of the Scottish Rite in Washington, DC. |
