E. C. ("Cliff") Singleton Rite Care CenterPost Office Box 9571 Who Are WeThe Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders is a program that provides professional speech/language therapy to preschool children suffering from speech or language disorders. The Columbia Center was established by the South Carolina Scottish Rite Foundation September 1, 1987 and is located in the Columbia Scottish Rite Center. Following in the footsteps of Scottish Rite Clinics across the country, this Center provides quality, state-of-the-art speech and language diagnostic and remediation services for preschool children with communicative disorders free of charge. However, these services are not "free." All services provided are supported by the Scottish Rite Foundation of South Carolina and through the generosity of the more than 15,000 members of the Scottish Rite Masons. Therefore, the Center can provide therapy to many families who otherwise could not afford to get the necessary help for their children. Over 1,000 children have been successfully treated at this Center. Program EligibilityThe Board of Directors of the Columbia Center has chosen to serve only preschool children who have difficulty speaking or understanding the spoken word. All services are available to preschool children regardless of race, creed, or color. This Center does not provide services to children who are enrolled in any public school services or receive speech and language therapy from another service provider, regardless of age or severity of their disorder. Children enrolled in private Kindergarten who do not receive additional speech and language services may receive services from this Center. This is because there is no free speech and language services available at most private Kindergartens. However, once children reach the first grade, they are no longer considered preschool children and are not eligible for services from our Center. Services AvailableDiagnosis of speech and language disorders: Future GoalsApproximately ten percent of South Carolina's children will experience some type of hearing, speech, language, or learning disorder. This Center, unlike any other agencies in the geographic area, provides speech and language services at no charge. With the exception of therapy available through public school programs, there are virtually no other "free" evaluation and therapy services for children with speech and language disorders in the Columbia or surrounding areas. This Center can serve approximately fifty children at a time. The Scottish Rite Center continues to need support/donations for staff, instructional materials, special equipment, and improved facilities. |
